Drafted October 1940. Served February 6, 1941 to November 1, 1945. Was in 110th Engineers then 209th Engineers, C Battalion in China-Burma-India area building Ledo Road. Commissioned from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant on battlefield at Myitkyina, Burma where an airfield was captured from the Japanese after a 78-day siege. There he received shrapnel wounds in leg on June 1, 1944. Was Company Administrative Officer. With commission he received a letter from General Stillwell commending him for his action in combat at a critical time at Myitkyina and unit received a Presidential citation for valorous action.
