Joined Oregon National Guard, 218th Field Artillery. Called to active duty 1940. Was en route to the Philippines when Japan attacked Hawaii; the convoy returned to San Francisco. Spent several months guarding the Bay Area with their field guns. Sent to Fort Lewis and then to Tennessee to train troops. Honorable discharge in 1943 due to medical reasons. Went to Alaska and worked building military sites on the Aleutian Islands where now, as a civilian, he was bombed by the Japanese.
