She got her training as a nurse at St. Joseph Infirmary School of Nursing in Louisville, Kentucky. She then enlisted and was a Nurse in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps. She served in the South Pacific (the Philippine Islands) during the later years of World War II. She was a part of the occupational forces that occupied Japan at the end of hostilities (1945). She was stationed at the 364th Station hospital, formerly the Japanese Red Cross Hospital in Kyoto. They were the first American women in Japan after the war and the first in the 6th Army Division.
