Anthony served with the 8th Army. Participated in Normandy and was captured by the Germans, while fighting at St. Lo. He was held as a German POW for a little over a year, at various German POW camps. Anthony received two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, POW Medal, Combat Ribbon (braid), Combat Infantryman Badge, as well as several other ribbons.
