SERVED AS A GUNMAN ON U.S. ARMED MERCHANT VESSELS FOR THE U.S. NAVY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. BECAME A 'SHELLBACK' WHEN HE CROSSED THE EQUATOR. HE ALSO SERVED ON THE SS JONATHON ELMER. ENLISTED AS AN APPRENTICE SEAMAN JUNE 6, 1944 AND WAS PROMOTED TO A SEAMAN 2ND CLASS AND TO SEAMAN 1ST CLASS. HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON JULY 25, 1945 FROM THE NAVY IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
