Activity During WWII

WALT ENTERED WWII DECEMBER 29, 1941. CEASED ACTIVE DUTY SEPTEMBER 9, 1945. WALT WAS A TECHNICAL SERGEANT AND WAS PROMOTED TO 2ND LIEUTENANT. IN ITALY HE WAS PROMOTED TO 1ST LIEUTENANT. HE WAS A FIRST LIEUTENENT, A PILOT WITH THE 15TH AIR DIVISION, 484TH BOMBER GROUP, FLYING FROM ITALY TO AFRICA AND GERMANY. HE WAS ON LONG RANGE BOMBING AND MADE 50 MISSIONS. HE HAS ORDERS FOR THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS FOR BRINGING IN THEIR PLANE WITH LESS WING SPAN THAN HAD EVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. ALL THE REST OF THE CREW BAILED OUT AND WERE ABOUT A MONTH GETTING BACK. HE WOULD NOT PICK UP HIS MEDAL AS HE SAID 'HE WAS TIRED STANDING IN LINES'. HE EARNED FIVE BRONZE STAR MEDALS. WALT'S NICKNAME WAS 'RED' AT THAT TIME.
