Served on the USS Drayton DD-366 in the Leyte Gulf which hit a mine. They were put in a floating dry dock; while in there, a kamikaze plane flew in to attack the ship and they were able to shoot it down. Sent to Annapolis for Officer training, commissioned as Ensign, later promoted to Lieutenant. Served on the USS Drayton as Executive Officer.
