On June 1, 1945, just two weeks before graduation, Carl joined the Navy at 18 years old. He trained in Sampson, New York and was sent to school in Bayonne, New Jersey for further training. Later he was assigned to the new aircraft carrier the USS Princeton. He was on her when she was commissioned in Philadelphia and received a Plank Owners Certificate for his participation; the war came to an end shortly thereafter.
