Enlisted in the Naval Reserves in 1939, at the age of 18. In February of 1941 he was called to active duty and served on the USS Seattle out of the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Also served aboard the USS Bunker Hill. He was discharged on September 25, 1945 after serving four and a half years in the Navy. Awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with 11 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze stars, the American Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with one star and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for his service during the war.
