Drafted into the Army on June 27, 1945, at the age of 28. He attended basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia and also went to clerk school while there. Served as a finance clerk, computing mustering out pay at Camp Lee for the next six months. Honorably discharged at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1945. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Sharpshooter Medal for his service.
