Drafted into the Army on July 20, 1943, at the age of 18. He attended basic training at Camp Grant, Illinois. Served in the Detachment Medical Department of the 68th Field Hospital in New Caledonia as a Medical Technician. He was discharged at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on January 17, 1946, after two years and six months of service. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Theater Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
