Drafted into the Army on August 18, 1944, at the age of 25. He attended basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina and received further training at Greensboro, North Carolina. Was shipped overseas after completing his training on the USS General W. P. Richardson AP-118. He served with the 34th Division, but was reassigned to the 88th Armored Division. They fought the Germans from the toe of the boot of Italy to Trieste in the northern mountains of the country. While there, his outfit participated in the Battle of Po Valley, as German forces retreated from Italy. He was discharged at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, on November 28, 1945 after serving for one year and three months in the Army. Awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
