Drafted into the Navy on May 26, 1943, at the age of 27. He received basic training in Newport, Rhode Island and then received further engineering training at Wentworth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. He served upon the USS Canberra CA-70, which was a heavy-armored cruiser. He served in the Navy for two years and five months and was discharged at the Fargo Building in Boston, Massachusetts on October 14, 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with six bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and a Citation from his Commanding Officer.
