Enlisted in the Coast Guard in August of 1942, at the age of 19. He attended two weeks of boot camp at the South Portland Armory and was called into service a few weeks later. For the first five months of his service he was assigned to beach patrol in Ogunquit, Maine. Early in 1943, he transferred onto the USS Campbell which was a 327-foot Coast Guard cutter. He was discharged on December 7, 1945 after serving three years and four months in the Coast Guard. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with one bronze star for Okinawa, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and a Navy Accommodation Medal for a sub his ship sank off of Rhode Island.
