Drafted in the Navy on April 11, 1944, at the age of 33. He attended basic training at the Naval Training Station (NTS) in Newport, Rhode Island. Served aboard the USS Athens in the Pacific Theater. Discharged from the Navy in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 13, 1945, after 1 year and 8 months of service. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal.
