Enlisted in the Army in September of 1942, when he was 18 years old. He attended four months of basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Served with the Headquarters Battery, 529th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Hood in Texas. Appointed to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland by Maine's State Representative, Margaret Chase Smith. He transferred to the Navy and attended four months of boot camp in Sampson, New York before going on to Navy prep school in Bainbridge, Maryland. He was medically discharged from the Navy on September 7, 1945 after three years of service, when he broke his wrist badly and was unable to further his training. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
