Drafted into the Army on April 21, 1943, at the age of 22. He attended six weeks of basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia. Served in the European Theater in England and France with the 1674th Engineer Utility Detachment. Was discharged from the Army on March 12, 1946 after two years and eleven months of service. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service.
