He enlisted in the Coast Guard Auxiliary Temporary Reserve Unit on July 19, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was stationed in Boothbay Harbor and patrolled the coast evenings. He was inducted into the Navy on March 27, 1945, at the age of 28. After leaving the Coast Guard Reserve, he received seven weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center (NTC) in Sampson, New York. He was reassigned to San Francisco, California where he worked in the naval post office. He was discharged in Shoemaker, California on April 5, 1946 after serving for one year and nine days in the Navy. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
