Volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in late Spring 1942. Commissioned as a Major and reported for active duty as Executive Officer of the 20th Field Hospital at Camp White, Oregon on August 13, 1942. Field Hospital was attached to the 7th Division during the invasion of the Aleutian Island of Attu on May 11, 1943. The 20th Field Hospital was transported back to the U.S. in Spring of 1944 to Camp Rucker, Alabama to prepare for action in Europe. September 2, 1944 went to France, landing on the Normandy beaches October 7, 1944. Was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and assigned as Executive Officer of the 108th Evacuation Hospital, attached to the 9th Army. Moved through Belgium, Holland and crossed the Rhine River in the area of Dusseldorf. At the end of hostilities in Europe the 108th Evacuation Hospital treated thousands of refugees, American and British Prisoner's of war and concentration camp forced laborers in Central Germany near the Elbe River. Returned to the U.S. in late September and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Medical Corps at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
