Served on USS Mayo DD-422, escorted convoys to Iceland and British Isles. Assigned to invasions of Casa Blanca, Salerno and Anzio. Ship was damaged by mine. After V-E Day, ship was sent to South Pacific for patrol duty until Japanese surrender. Attended V-J Day ceremonies in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri.
