Activity During WWII

Registered for the Navy on December 4, 1943. On January 14, 1944 was classified in Class 1-A and was inducted on March 11, 1944, the Date which he left for Boot Camp. He served on the LSM 357 and was based at Little Creek, Virginia. On March 12, HE arrived at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and was assigned to Company 534. On April 18, he completed Boot Training. On May 3, he departed from Great Lakes and arrived at the Amphibious Training Case, Little Creek, Virginia, Receiving Unit. During the months of May through November, HE continued his training. On December 4, 1944, he departed from Little Creek to pick up the LSM 357. He arrived at Camp Wallace, Houston, Texas and was then transferred to the Receiving Station, Brown Ship Yard, in Houston. In January 1945, the LSM 357 went through regular shake down cruises, coming in and out of Houston and Galveston, Texas. On February 7, 1945, the ship departed Galveston and on February 14 arrived in Coco Solo, Panama. He then departed Panama on February 16, 1945 and arrived in San Diego on February 28. The LSM 357 was docked for repairs. HE departed San Diego on March 28 and arrived in San Francisco, California 3 days later. On April 4, 1945, at 1600 the LSM 357 passed under the Golden Gate Bridge heading out to sea. On April 11 he arrived in Pearl Harbor, Island of Oahu and left the area on May 11. Continuing on with his journey, he then arrived in Eniwetok, Marshall Islands for 3 days to arrive in Guam for a 6 day stay. The sailing continued to Leyte, Tacloban, Phillipine Islands and then on to Samar, Leyte, Manila and back to Leyte. This travel continued through June 1945. On July 10, HE arrived in Guadacanal, Solomon Islands and then HEADED to Russell Islands, Enitetok, Guam, Siapen, Leyte, Linayen Gulf, Akiyama, Honshu Japan, Samoan, Kurek, Japan, Buckner Bay, Okinawa, Nakayama and finally arriving at the receiving Station in Saipan on November 18, 1945. He boarded the USS Santa Fe and arrived at the Treasure Island Receiving Station in San Francisco, California WHERE HE WAS Granted a 30-day leave. On January 11, 1946 HE WAS HONORABLY Discharged AS A COXSWAIN from the U.S. Naval Receiving Station, Washington, D.C. HE was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Phillippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific THEATER Medal, AND American Campaign Medal.
