CLEM WAS INDUCTED INTO THE U.S. ARMY IN FEBRUARY 1942 AND SERVED WITH DISTINCTION AS A GUNNER AND OBSERVER WITH A MECHANIZED TRACK-MOUNTED ARTILLERY UNIT. AS A CORPORAL, HE PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS BATTLES OF THE RHINELAND, ARDENNES AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. HIS UNIT WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION FOR THEIR HEROIC EFFORTS DURING THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. HE WAS SEPARATED FROM THE ARMY IN MARCH 1946.
