In September 1995, 50 years late, he received 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 18 Air Medals, earned as a Bomber Pilot on Bougainville and Rabaul, the Japanese base in the Solomon Islands. Later he was transferred to the Fighter Squadron on the USS Essex and was part of the first bombing flight over Japan.
