My father served with the 345th Bombardment Group which was activated November 11, 1942 at Columbia Army Air Base in South Carolina. He served in what was then the Army Air Corps from April 25, 1942 until his discharge October 7, 1945. His rank was Corporal and he was wounded November 12, 1944 in the Invasion of the Philippines when a kamikaze pilot dove into their troop ship which was waiting to dock in San Pedro Bay, Leyte, the Philippines. He received a Presidential Citation and Purple Heart.
