ENLISTED THE DAY AFTER PEARL HARBOR, VOLUNTEERED FOR DUTY ABOARD A MINE PLANTER-SWEEPER. PROMOTED FROM 1ST SERGEANT TO WARRANT OFFICER IN COMMAND OF THE SHIP. PERFORMED MINE SWEEPING IN THE ATLANTIC, THEN CLEARED THE WAY FOR EISENHOWER'S LANDING IN AFRICA. SERVED IN THE BATTLE OF NEW GUINEA, THEN ASSIGNED FOR A WHILE TO THE OCCUPATION OF JAPAN. SERVED 4 1/2 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY. AWARDED 2 COMMENDATIONS.
