Entered the U.S. Naval Reserve through Cincinnati Recruiting station; 2 SEPTEMBER 1943. Recruit training at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. Motor Machinist's Mate training at Chicago Navy Pier. Amphibious training at Amphibious Training Base, Solomons, Maryland. Shipped out of New Orleans aboard USS LST-666 as Fireman 1st Class along with the crewmembers of USS LCT-719. USS LCT-719 and crew were transported onboard USS Casa Grande (LSD-13) from Humboldt Bay, Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea to Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands. Served aboard USS LCT-719 in the invasion of Lingayen Gulf. Served as Motor Machinist's Mate 3rd Class aboard USS APc-16 in the Philippine Islands.
