Served in the battles of Ulithi and Okinawa. His ship was hit by a Japanese suicide bomber causing death and injury to his ship mates. He tended to the wounded; one man died while he was tending to his injuries. He also summoned a ship to provide doctor's care for the wounded. In addition to his duties as an Electronic Technician's Mate, he operated and maintained a decoding machine and provided continuous movies for the men, much to their enjoyment.
