He served with the 2nd Marine Division stationed at Schofield Barracks and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Participated in the Tulagi, Guadalcanal and Tarawa Campaigns in the South Pacific Theater of Operations as a Rifleman and Flamethrower. Awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action on Tarawa.
