Was in the African Campaign. Landed in Anzio. Severely wounded, but would not leave his men. 1st tank to enter Rome, lunch in Rome with General George C. Marshall. Killed the sniper, who killed the General's stepson. General Marshall offered to send him back to the States for a rest, but he would not leave his men with no one to take over. Claire Booth Luce called Italy Campaign, 'The Forgotten Front'. Killed June 26, 1944, a few weeks after entering Rome by a German sniper.
