Shipwreck off North Coast, Scotland. Volunteered to try to a line to another ship standing by to help pull ship off the rocks. Elmer was a good swimmer but he had to pulled back because he was about to freeze. The ship broke up and all men on board were lost including Captain, except 11 who survive. Elmer spent over a year in San Francisco Marine Hospital. When he finally was retired to San Francisco, Doctor was going to cut off his foot, he would not allow it.
