From December 4, 1940 - first draft on December 5, 1940; one of the first six men in Alabama inducted at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Private, E-1 in charge of personnel at a Georgia induction station, 1941 to 1942. Technician 4th Grade. Resigned from Officer Candidate School in 1943. From Sergeant, 22nd Armored Division to Cadre, 526th Armored Battalion, to separate secret training in the Arizona desert. 9th Armored Group, 1st Sergeant, Service Company, 526th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1944 to 1945; in Wales, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. Awarded four Battles Stars.
