ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON 3 DECEMBER, 1943. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON 9 JULY 1944 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. SAW COMBAT AS A RIFLEMAN WITH COMPANY K, 179TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 45TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE SOUTHERN FRANCE (INCLUDING D-DAY) AND RHINELAND CAMPAIGNS. WOUNDED BY A BULLET THROUGH THE CALF, BUT STAYED IN ACTION IN EARLY SEPTEMBER 1944. ON OR ABOUT 29 NOVEMBER 1944 NEAR BOUXWILLER, FRANCE CITED FOR MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT IN GROUND OPERATIONS AGAINST THE ENEMY. SEVERELY WOUNDED IN EARLY 1945 AS HIS UNIT MOVED INTO GERMANY. EVACUATED TO ENGLAND AND THENCE TO STATESIDE HOSPITALS. EARNED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL, THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL WITH 1 OAK LEAF CLUSTER, THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS AND THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. AFTER RECUPERATION, HONORABLE DISCHARGE WITH A CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS FROM THE PERCY JONES HOSPITAL CENTER AT FORT CUSTER, MICHIGAN ON 25 JUNE 1945.
