ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON OCTOBER 30, 1941. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON MAY 11, 1942 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. SAW COMBAT AS A RIFLEMAN IN NORTH AFRICA, THE SICILIAN CAMPAIGN AND THE ITALIAN CAMPAIGN. WOUNDED IN ACTION NEAR SBEITLA, TUNISIA ON FEBRUARY 15, 1943. RETURNED TO THE U.S. ON MAY 30, 1944. EARNED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL AND THE EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH THREE BRONZE BATTLE STARS. HONORABLY DISCHARGED IN POOR HEALTH AS A SERGEANT FROM THE STATION COMPLEMENT AT CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA ON SEPTEMBER 25, 1944.
