ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON 4 MARCH 1943 AT CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS. AFTER BASIC TRAINING AT FORT LEWIS, WASHINGTON. PARTICIPATED IN MANEUVERS AT FORT POLK, LOUISIANA AND STATIONED AT FORT RILEY, KANSAS. SHIPPED OVERSEAS AS AN AUTO MECHANIC VIA NEW YORK TO THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS ON 5 SEPTEMBER 1944 WITH COMPANY L, 3RD BATTALION, 114TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 44TH INFANTRY DIVISION. PARTICIPATED IN NORTHERN FRANCE, RHINELAND AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. AWARDED THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, THE EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 3 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. HONORABLE DISCHARGE AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS FROM THE 98TH ORDNANCE HEAVY MAINTENANCE COMPANY AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS ON 31 JANUARY 1946.
