ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON MARCH 4, 1943 AT CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON SEPTEMBER 5, 1944 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. ENTERED COMBAT AND SERVED AS A SQUAD LEADER WITH HEADQUARTERS COMPANY, 324TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 44TH INFANTRY DIVISION. FOUGHT IN THE NORTHERN FRANCE, ARDENNES, RHINELAND AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL, THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, THE EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 4 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A SERGEANT ON NOVEMBER 6, 1945 AT CAMP CHAFFEE, ARKANSAS.
