Activity During WWII

Enlisted on 5/13/42 and discharged on 9/8/45. 18th Naval Construction Battalion attached to 2nd Marines (most of the time). Trained at Camps Allen, Virginia and Endicott, Rhode Island. Built airport, Guadalcanal; reclamation and repair, New Zealand; participated in taking Tarawa, rebuilt Gilbert Islands. Jumped coral reef 3 times to and on Saipan, helped build air strip from which plane took off that dropped bombs on Japan. Came to Tennessee on furlough on train in Reno, Nevada when heard Japan surrendered. He was headed for invasion of Japan.
