Inducted May 1, 1941. Private to 1st Sergeant, Officer Candidate School (OCS), Fort Benning, Georgia. 2nd Lieutenant Cadre to form new 102nd infantry division. Served as Battalion S-3, then Commanding Officer, Heavy Weapons Company. Landed at Cherbourg just after 'D-Day', in the European Theater. Became Battalion Commander. Crossed the Ruhr River and on to the Rhine. Wounded twice. Hospitalized in England and sent back to U.S. in hospital ship. Received two Purple Hearts, Silver Star, Chester Bronze Star, European Campaign Ribbon and 2 Battle Stars. Expert Infantry. Served 4-1/2 years. Released from service; Rank of Major.
