SERVED AS A SEAMAN FIRST CLASS ON THE USS BLOCK ISLAND (CVE-21) AND AS THE SHIP'S COOK ON THE SECOND BLOCK ISLAND SHIP (CVE-106). HE SURVIVED THE SINKING OF THE CVE-21, BY A GERMAN SUBMARINE, ON THE NIGHT OF MAY 29, 1944 IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
