LIEUTENANT. ASSIGNED AS THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE USS O-9 (SS-70). ON JUNE 20, 1941, THE USS O-9 WAS CONDUCTING A DEEP SUBMERGENCE TEST DIVE OFF OFF THE ISLES OF SHOALS, PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, WHEN THE SUBMARINE FLOUNDERED AND WAS LOST. RECEIVED THE AMERICAN DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL.
