Commanded the 94th Bomb Group. Later, 3rd Division Commander. Helped General Eaker create the 8th Air Force in Europe. Responsible for the planning of an elaborate system of air bases, spare parts, depots and supply installations for an air force not yet in existence. Participated in the Regensburg mission as well as missions into Germany, Poland and Russia. Killed December 24, 1944 while leading an air division of B-17 aircraft over Europe.
