From 1940 to 1942 served in the Caribbean Defense Command in the Panama Area with the 6th Bomber Command. Was then sent to the China-Burma-India Theater and served as communications officer of the 58th bomb wing, 20th Bomber Command. This was the first mission of the B-29 aircraft against Japan. In 1945 was transferred to the office of the Air Communications, Headquarters Army Air Force at the Pentagon. He was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon.
