SHORTLY AFTER THE U.S. ENTERED THE WAR HE WAS ORDERED TO LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, WHERE HE COMMISSIONED A BRITISH CORVETTE INTO THE U.S. NAVY FOR USE AS A PROTECTOR OF CONVOYS ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST. LATER, AFTER COMMANDING A DIVISION OF DESTROYER ESCORTS, HE BECAME ESCORT COMMANDER OF TRANS-ATLANTIC CONVOYS. HE WAS AWARDED A BRONZE STAR FOR EXPEDITIOUSLY DIRECTING SHIPS IN FULFILLING DIFFICULT CONVOY ASSIGNMENTS. FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE END OF THE WAR, HE WAS COMMANDER OF THE DESTROYER BORIE WHEN IT WAS ATTACKED BY JAPANESE SUICIDE PLANES OFF THE SHORES OF JAPAN. HE DIRECTED HIS GUN BATTERIES TO FEND OFF SUBSEQUENT ATTACKS AND HELPED EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. HE RECEIVED A SILVER STAR FOR HIS ACTIONS.
