Colonel Hand entered the service as a 1st lieutenant in March 1941 when the 106th Infantry regiment, New York National Guard (Brooklyn) was federalized. He was transferred to the Signal Corps because of his background as an engineer with the New York Bell Telephone Company and served with honor until the end of the war.
