Entered in 1944 and served in the 1st Infantry Division as a combat infantryman. Awarded a bronze star for valor during the Battle of the Bulge. He was severely wounded in Germany just before the end of the European war. Eventually he was transferred to a military hospital in San Diego County for orthopedic rehabilitation.
