Staff Sergeant. His B-17 was shot down over the North Sea in May 1943. Spent the next 2 years in 5 different German POW camps, escaping and being re-captured on 7 separate occasions until he and his fellow prisoners were liberated in May 1945 by advancing Russian troops.
