Taken prisoner May 15, 1943; he was a gunner on a B-17 that was shot down over the North Sea. He was in 5 German POW camps in 2 years. Escaped 7 times and recaptured. Liberated May 15, 1945. His weight dropped to 118 pounds, he was nearly 6 feet tall.
