In May 1942, he was among thousands of U.S. and Filipino troops forced to surrender after Japan's 5 month bombardment of Corregidor; liberated on September 4, 1945. Suffered a broken leg (the result of a lead weight tossed at him by a Japanese guard) and a skull fracture from a blow inflicted by a sword and scabbard. Stationed in Shanghai, China and then in the Philippines. When the U.S. entered the war, he was in Subic Bay with an outfit that later was sent to Corregidor to set up beach defenses. Awarded the Bronze Star.
