Co-Pilot (Truculent Turtle), flew a record 11,235 miles without refueling from Perth, Australia to Columbus, Ohio. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit. Commanding Officer of a Squadron of PBY patrol planes (flying boats). Black cat squadron, designed to disrupt Japanese ship and barge traffic in Bougainville from August 1943 to June 1944.
