Activity During WWII

Served as a pilot in the 8th Air Force, 388th Bomb Group, in Europe. Participated in the first American bombing mission to Berlin. Returning from a subsequent mission to Berlin, he was able to ditch his heavily flak damaged B-17 into the North Sea and save his entire crew. His experiences were described by war correspondent Ernie Pyle in book and newspaper articles. Shortly after his ditching, he helped Pyle pack for a trip that was to be the Normandy Invasion. He was highly decorated and a survivor of 35 combat missions over Germany and Europe.
