ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE ON 14 MARCH 1944. COMPLETED BOOT CAMP AT NAVAL TRAINING STATION, GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS. ASSIGNED TO AND SERVED ABOARD THE CLEVELAND CLASS LIGHT CRUISER USS SANTA FE (CL-60). ENGAGED IN OPERATIONS AGAINST THE ENEMY IN WESTERN NEW GUINEA, MARIANA ISLANDS, WESTERN CAROLINE ISLANDS, LEYTE, LUZON, IWO JIMA AND OKINAWA GUNTO. EARNED THE COMBAT ACTION MEDAL (RETROACTIVE AWARD), THE NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION, THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, THE ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 1 SILVER AND 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE PHILIPPINE LIBERATION MEDAL WITH 2 BRONZE STARS. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A SEAMAN SECOND CLASS ON 9 MAY 1946 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS.
